Book Review: Crank by Ellen Hopkins
I usually only review Indie titles, but as of late all I'm reading are the usual comics and the wonderful Ellen Hopkins. As a result, I wanted to review what I've been reading. Enjoy!
Burned was my
first Hopkins and soon after completing this wonderful work of free verse
poetry, I found myself immersed in Crank.
Ha, not in the way that you’re thinking.
I found myself pulled into Kristina Snow’s world with the
opening lines of this novel:
Life was good before I met the monster. After, life was great. At least
for a little while.
The monster
in this situation is the same one the novel is named for: Crank. Which I actually had to Google because I thought it was
cocaine, when, in fact, it is meth.
A summer
spent with her absent father let the monster peek inside of Kristina’s bedroom.
Despite this fact, I got the feeling she was already open to hitting rock
bottom.
Soon after her father introduces
her to meth, she falls in love with a boy that convinces her to actually use.
He says teenage boy shit like, meth will “make you want to make love to me.”
I can’t really say that Kristina’s
first love was responsible for her subsequent downfall. Why? Because it was
actually disturbing how willing she
was to try the drug.
Then she
does it again…
And again… gets raped, experiences true love for a short
time, which seems to become null when she gets pregnant by the rapist and
decides to keep the baby.
Good news is: she does quit for Hunter (her son)… but Hopkins
gives you the eerie feeling that she isn’t done with her real love. As Crank comes to an end you can feel the
itch along with Kristina.
She uses again and her sordid story is continued in Glass, which I did read and will review
for you all at some other time.
All in all, every living person should read Hopkins. Her
writing is simplistic and speaks volumes. Not easy to do. She is a master at
what she does.

Book Review: Bound by Kira Saito
First of all, don't you just adore this cover? Now, a synopsis I stole from Amazon....
Sixteen year old Arelia LaRue lives in New Orleans where the music is loud, voodoo queens inhabit every street corner, and the ghosts are alive and well. Despite her surroundings, all she wants is to help her Grand-mere Bea pay the rent and save up for college.
When her best friend Sabrina convinces her to take a well-paying summer job at the infamous Darkwood plantation, owned by the wealthy LaPlante family, Arelia agrees.
However, at Darkwood strange things start to happen, and gorgeous Lucus LaPlante insists that he needs her help. Soon, the powers that Arelia has been denying all her life, come out to play and she discovers mysteries about herself that she could have never imagined.
****
The first thing I have to say about this book is that I'm fairly certain the author cast a spell on me. I was sucked into the scenery and could almost smell the magic within the haunting city of New Orleans. There were also several times I felt myself wanting to be a hot voodoo queen like our feisty heroin-Arelia.
This is also the first time I've seen voodoo portrayed in this way. Namely, Arelia isn't some old hag. She's young, she's white, and she's instantly likable. The author brought her to life, and I found myself wishing we could meet one day. Reading Saito is like a breath of fresh air. I would recommend this title to any and all lovers of the young adult-paranormal romance genre. If you want something new and inventive, meet your next book.

Book Review: The Dome: Revelation by Nova Sparks
Well, I haven't done one of these in quite some time... yes, its book review time. Before I get into the important stuff, namely-what I think about this title, please enjoy this synopsis taken from Amazon.
Sam Tucker thought he was saving the lives of his fellow Coloradans when he rushed them and his family into an alien spaceship and away from a crumbling Earth. But given recent events...he was DEAD WRONG! With the brutal murder of his best friend and the equally mysterious series of events that preceded, he is absolutely sure that the race of aliens that have given the humans a home on their planet, are hostile. The Syrions want something from the humans and Sam is sure of it.
Emma Tucker didn't expect to fall in love with a Syrion boy and she definitely didn't expect for her life to be ruined because of it. After a group of dangerous Syrions found out about her involvement with one of their own, they made sure that she got the message to stay away. Living in fear inside of the Dome, Emma finds herself in the company of a human, Jason, a young man who seems to be everything Emma should want. But the more she tries to distance herself from a life she craves, the more the effects start to take its toll on her. Emma's changing and she doesn't know why. Working together with her father to discover the intentions of the Syrions, Emma realizes that the only way she can get answers about the fate of the humans is to risk everything.
the DOMErevelation is a heart pounding adventure of love, trust and self-discovery.
Continue the journey...Invade the truth.
*****
Now that we have that out of the way, I must say the first thing I liked about this book was that it starts with chapter twenty, which I found clever. Allow me to explain... this is the second book in The Dome Trilogy and the first book ended where?
Chapter 19! Ah-Ah-Ah!
Yes, its fun here-is it not? Anyway. I loved the second book in this trilogy a lot more than the first title. The first reason being that I didn't have to wait for it to start. While the opening in The Dome was lovely, I prefer this opening more because it strikes. Emma is still my favorite character, and I loved that Sparks showed her softer side a bit more in this title-although it did make the ending more heart wrenching for me.
I also found myself warming up to Sam a bit more. While I have always liked his character... I just liked him, but never felt any real connection to him. Kudos to the author on that accomplishment.
All in all, the pacing is pefectly executed, the emotion leaps off the pages, and the ending is pulse pounding. Trust me, when you get this you may very yell... "Oh, come on! WTF!"

Paranormal Wire Spotlight on Author Kirsten Fay
Natasha Larry here sharing a sneak peak from Paranormal Wire's first newsletter set to come out in....
So, I asked Rainy Kaye to suggest a few indie authors to feature in this newsletter. She suggested Kirsten Fay, an author I am currently reading. I asked Kirsten why she self-published and this is what she had to say.

So, I asked Rainy Kaye to suggest a few indie authors to feature in this newsletter. She suggested Kirsten Fay, an author I am currently reading. I asked Kirsten why she self-published and this is what she had to say.
I look before I leap, and I pondered self-publishing vs. traditional publishing for a long time. I researched the pros and cons, talked to people in the industry, bought books, etc. To illustrate my reason for self-publishing, in the best way I know how, here’s a little story:
Imagine that you love to paint. And whenever you can, you paint the things that you love most, like a tree, a bird, a fierce black unicorn with viscous fire-red eyes and smoke wafting from its snout…whatever you’re into.
Knowing that other people would love to buy your paintings, you submit them for mass production. After many long years, and countless submissions, someone gives you a contract with a reputable but small printing company. However, Mr. Johnson Boss Man says to you, “I don’t quite like the look of your unicorn. I think it should be green with pink and orange stripes.” And though you throw up in your mouth a little, you say, “yes sir, whatever you want sir.”
So you change your painting and resubmit. Mr. Johnson Boss Man says, “much better. Now, my production team is going to put a leopard print frame around it, add in all of our names to the credit, and take 95% of the profit. Why don’t you run off and start promoting?”
O_o “Say what now?”
Anyway, I self-published because I like my unicorns black.

I haven't read a good science fiction fantasy with some awesome steamy romance in a long time; Demon Possession was a great debut for author Kiersten Fay.
The story starts off with a bang, the lead female character Analia is trapped on a ship that she calls The Hell Ship. And she is right, used and enslaved on the ship by its horrible captain Analia will do anything to get away. Luckily a merchant ship comes in and become her only way out of the hell.
This ship is far different than the one she has lived on most of her life. The crew is cheerful and the captain...oh the captain is downright sexy. Sebastian is from a demon race where the males have horns and females have tales. He is every bit a good captain but his temper is always up and down and even more so with the sudden appearance of Analia.
The characters are so entertaining a really well written, each with such different personalities that everyone will connect with them. There is humor, action, and different alien species and of course some really hot romance.
The captain not only has his crew but his brother and sister along for the ride as well. Sonya and Cale are key characters to the first book and I know will be even more in the second. Sonya is spunky and tough as nails, where Cale can take down anyone with just a look. Loved these too.
The romance...Oh wow. Can I just say the scenes between Analia and Sebastian were not only steamy, they made you blush, smile, and wish you were in Analia shoes. Sebastian is smoking and Analia is a whole bundle of desire for him. I liked the chemistry and bickering, got to have a bit of drama between the two leads.

Overall this was a great book, defiantly will recommend this to anyone who loves paranormal romance, romance, and science fiction fantasy. Kiersten Fay is an author that everyone should be watching out for and getting her book.
Kiersten Fay has been a fan of the paranormal all her life, from watching sci-fi and supernatural television shows with her eccentric mother, to reading almost every type of romance she can get her hands on.
Before becoming an author Kiersten worked as a ninja graphic designer, and while she loved it, her true passion was in writing paranormal romance. Currently Kiersten is working on her steamy romance series called Shadow Quest, based loosely on mythology and lore, with a little sci-fi thrown in.
