Today I'm glad to host the wonderfully talented author, Wenona Hulsey on the blog. Today she is talking about Blood Burden, her urban fantasy series. Enjoy! 
 

First of all, thank you so much for letting me guest post on your page!

I'm Wenona Hulsey, author of the Blood Burden series.  I'm also a mother of two wonderful children and an avid reader like most of you.  I have a weakness for men in kilts and if you combine that with super-human powers I become a swoony mess.

They, whoever "they" are, say write what you know.  Well, I've never met a person who could read minds, move across a room in the blink of an eye, shoot flames from their hands or erase every trace of themselves from your memory, so where does writing leave us dreamers?  With a blank page just begging to be covered with our own world!!

That's how the Blood Burden series began.  I love anything that isn't normal, everyday and complacent.  After all, isn't that why most of us read?--To escape the everyday monotony of our lives by seeing the world through someone else's eyes for just a little while.  That's what it was like writing Blood Awakening.  I became Nicole Keenan, the young woman who was trying to escape the pain in her life only to find that a power has been sleeping in her veins, waiting for the chance to rise and point her toward her destiny.

Okay I know what your first thought is, "Is she a vampire?" Let me jump into this with one word, NO.  Don't get me wrong, I love a good vamp romance with bite but I am a rebel.  There are no vampires or werewolves in my books!! (I'm saying that stomping my bunny slipper clad foot)  But there are lots of swoon worthy, power wielding warriors and bad a$$ fairies in this modern day story.  The Blood Burden series has been affectionately called a genre freak because it fits into paranormal romance, suspense and epic fantasy.  Personally I like the "Genre Freak" label because it means my books are unique in a sea of fantastic authors.

Book Review: The Dome: Revelation by Nova Sparks

Well, I haven't done one of these in quite some time... yes, its book review time. Before I get into the important stuff, namely-what I think about this title, please enjoy this synopsis taken from Amazon.

Sam Tucker thought he was saving the lives of his fellow Coloradans when he rushed them and his family into an alien spaceship and away from a crumbling Earth. Now that we have that out of the way, I must say the first thing I liked about this book was that it starts with chapter twenty, which I found clever. Allow me to explain... this is the second book in The Dome Trilogy and the first book ended where?

Chapter 19! Ah-Ah-Ah!

Yes, its fun here-is it not? Anyway. I loved the second book in this trilogy a lot more than the first title. The first reason being that I didn't have to wait for it to start. While the opening in The Dome was lovely, I prefer this opening more because it strikes. Emma is still my favorite character, and I loved that Sparks showed her softer side a bit more in this title-although it did make the ending more heart wrenching for me.

I also found myself warming up to Sam a bit more. While I have always liked his character... I just liked him, but never felt any real connection to him. Kudos to the author on that accomplishment.

All in all, the pacing is pefectly executed, the emotion leaps off the pages, and the ending is pulse pounding. Trust me, when you get this you may very yell... "Oh, come on! WTF!"

Ravena and the Resurrected: A Book Review

Ravena & The Resurrected by Tami Jayne Jackson

Ravena desperately wants to join ranks with Seattle's undead-this novel is a take of her journey from open fascination with the world of the undead to the realization of her dream coming true.


I loved reading this book for several reasons. The most obvious, and less important reason is my obsession with all things paranormal. The most important reason I loved this book is because it was just ridiculously entertaining and refreshingly original-a hard feat to pull off in the genre flooded vampire market.


I like how the novel reads like a series of journals because it puts the reader easily in the main character's shoes. I was also very impressed with the relevance this novel surprisingly has on American culture in the 21st Century. We are, after all, a nation obsessed with vampires and I was glad to read a story reflecting THAT fact.


I would read this again and think fans of vampire lore will find this a fast paced, real, and refreshing imagining of a world where fangs and mortals collide. Well done.
